Mainly credited to Lauscha, Germany where they began blowing glass baubles into clay molds. That evolved into commercial operations by the early 1900's, but were still expensive by this century's perspective. Eventually the ornaments took on many different shapes as molds and materials became more sophisticated. That also drove down prices so that breaking an ornaments is no longer a tragedy due to loss of a piece of art!
